Skills from Across the Pond
Bringing British Building Skills to Texas
At the Skill Development Ranch, we believe the best training comes from combining proven techniques, practical experience and ideas from across the construction industry.
Alongside the skills commonly used in American construction, the Ranch will introduce trainees to selected UK building methods and craftmanship — giving them broader understanding of how homes and buildings can be constructed.
Brick and Block Construction
One of the most recognisable differences between British and American residential construction is the widespread use of brick-and-block masonry in the UK.
Trainees will have the opportunity to learn practical masonry skills including:
- • Setting out walls accurately and working from plans
• Mixing and working with Mortar
• Laying bricks and concrete blocks
• Brick bonding and jointing techniques
• Building corners, openings and structural details
• Understanding cavity-wall construction
• Installing insulation within masonry wall systems
• Moisture management and damp-prevention principles
• Developing the accuracy and workmanship expected of professional masonry
Understanding Different Ways to Build
The aim isn't to suggest that one country's construction methods are better than another. Instead, trainees will learn why buildings are constructed differently in different parts of the world.
Old-World Skills. New Opportunities.
Construction is increasingly shaped by new materials and technology, but traditional trade skills remain enormously valuable. By exposing trainees to techniques they might not ordinarily encounter in a conventional US training environment, the Skill Development Ranch can help develop more knowledgeable, adaptable and versatile craftspeople.
From laying a straight brick wall to understanding how an entirely different residential building system comes together, every additional skill creates another opportunity.
UK masonry construction can be studied alongside the wood-framed construction commonly found throughout Texas and the United States. This gives trainees the opportunity to understand the advantages, limitations, materials and skills associated with each approach.
Built for Texas. Inspired by experience from Abroad.
The techniques demonstrated at the Ranch will be taught in an educational environment and considered alongside Texas building codes, local climate conditions, engineering requirements and accepted US construction practices.
The objective is simple
Take great ideas and proven skills from both sides of the Atlantic and put them into the hands of the next generation of American tradespeople.
